Default Medical Insurance Questions

So my Dad leaves me a voicemail saying that the medical insurance called him (Im on his medical insurance and I do not speak to him anymore) and they said I need to call them back because I was involved in a motorcycle accident.

I called them back and gave them a file number. So this guy starts getting info from me. Stuff like: How did the accident happen, where did it happen.. etc.

Then he starts asking me: Whats the year make and model of the bike? Then he says.. what insurance do you have? I told him.

I immediately regretted that.

I asked him why he needed that. He said that they will be contacting my motorcycle ins company to find out what medical coverage I have. ??? WHY do they need to do that?

Im worried about this because I did not file a claim with my insurance about the motorcycle accident. I didnt want my premiums to go up so I just paid out of pocket for the parts for the bike.

When my Dads medical ins calls my bike ins.. Will the bike insurance file a claim "for me" ??

I hope I didnt just screw myself by calling the medical insurance back. All I did was get my knee cleaned up and X rayed at the hospital.. Why would they need my bike ins info for that?!?!??

ugh.. I just dont want my bike insurance to get any higher!

Whats going to happen guys?!??

Thanks!
-Dustin

Well, you may have shot yourself in the foot by telling them. If they do conatct your Bike insurance, then they might put the accident on your record with the company. They may not raise your rates as you did not file a claim with them and THEY are not paying out.

I will say this though, just from a global perspective, they could use the accident to put you in a higher risk tier.
Sounds like you might just have to wait and see how it plays out, you would hope that the medical insurance does not contact the Bike insurer.

If you did not claim against your insurance company and are not going to receive money from them, you shouldn't have to worry.

Your health insurance is subrogated - that means that they have the right to collect back from you whatever you receive from someone else in the event of an accident of some sort.

I was recently in a car accident and they will be collecting their costs back from me after I settle with the other driver's insurance company.

Your rates should not go up since whatever they claim against your insurance will be through your PIP (personal injury protection) insurance. PIP insurance is a separate rider that is just like regular health insurance - it does not rise based on use.

You're fine.

Thank god!

I did not call my insurance company at all to file a claim.. I just paid out of pocket.

Therefore my insurance didnt pay out anything for anyone..

Thanks Jon for explaining!

I was in the same exact situation one year ago...... if it was a "dirt" bike accident off of public roadways, then your motorcycle insurance would not need to know about it....

Let me get this straight. Your bike insurance covers your bike and medical bills related to any accident. You have an accident. You pay for your bike to get fixed by personally paying cash. You try to put your medical bills on your medical insurance as if they aren't related to an accident. I think i know why your medical insurance is calling you. It looks like fraud to them and they want their money back.

if you paid the cash out of pocket to fix the bike, then I guess you should have done that for your x-ray and related medical bills.

Not the case usually. You pay bike insurance premiums so that the company will cover you in the event of an accident. They will not penalize you for using the insurance. What they will do, however, is put you in a higher tier (as said by a previous poster) if you are involved in an accident, but usually only if they consider it to be at-fault. The rationale is, based on statistics, if someone has been in an accident before, there is a greater likelyhood that they will be in an accident again, and a greater chance the company will have to pay for that accident. So, they charge more.

So in the end, it doesn't matter whether or not the company has to pay for your damages. What matters is if they discover you have been involved in an at-fault accident.

EDIT: JonBoy's insurance didn't go up because the other party was at fault. If you were involved in a motorcycle accident, and it didn't involve any other drivers or vehicles (single vehicle accident) it would be considered at-fault. Sorry dude...
Let me get this straight: I don't have a choice as to when I use my car insurance? Because that's basically what you're telling me. If my insurance COULD cover something then my other insurance CAN and WILL claim against it...even though it's not in my interest to ever collect against my car insurance (higher premiums, etc, etc).

I have a problem believing that. What if the bills were less than my deductible? Would my health insurance collect against my car insurance?

My health insurance (and almost everyone else in the world) is subrogated. However, if I have not claimed against any other insurance, there is no fraud because I am not "double dipping".

I fail to see how the OP did anything wrong.

Was it because you called him an MF with your dirty mouth? Does your family call each other that? I bet you do, I bet you do.
