Miata HP issue
Thought everyone might find this interesting,
Miata for 01' was suposed to have a 15hp increase, 140-155.
many who dynoed the car, and even the mags didnt feel or see this increase. So a bunch of owners got together and sent mazda a letter. this is the response from Mazda.
Mazda has issued a press release that should reach all 2001 owners.
Without getting into the mumbo jumbo of the release, lack of horsepower, yadda yadda yadda, just know that they do recognize the problem and have been addressing it ever since many of the large automotive magazines noticed the lack of power long ago.
MNAO will offer the consumer two options:
1. MNAO will repurchase the consumers 2001 Mazda Miata for it's full, original purchase price, including taxes and license fees. Obviously if there is any abnormal damage, they will deduct the amount to repair it. This option must be exercised within 30 days of consumers receipt of the letter
--OR--
2. MNAO will offer free factory-scheduled maintenance at an authorized Mazda dealership (worth up to $800) for the length of the MIata's warranty _and_ send the consumer a $500 mastercard debit card to spend any way they would like.
Talk about standing behind products!!!!!
I wonder if I write to Honda and complain about having to pay 2500$ over I would get some sort of compensation.....

They are just avoiding a lawsuit. Unsubstantiated claims from the manufacturer are very different from issues like dealer markup. If Honda made a claim that was clearly false we would get a very similar reaction.
Hey guys, I'm not impressed about this at all. Basically what we have is a manufacturer admitting that there isn't a horsepower improvement and they lied about it in their advertising/literature.
You're darned right I'd want my money back.

How is Honda responsible for you deciding to pay too much for your car? I don't see the correlation between that and the miata not having the advertised horsepower number. I'm just curious how you made that correlation. The dealers won't charge more than people are willing to pay, otherwise they would never sell a car.

Sounds just like the '99 Ford Cobra debacle.
-salesman
"Yes! It has 320 hp and will smoke a LS1"
-reality
only makes about 290hp and gets smoked by the LS1.
Fords reaction: denial, excuses, then a half hearted
effort to "fix" the car. They added a extrude honed intake
,higher flow exhaust system(loud) and reflashed the pcm.
Most owners were not satisfied, that's why there was no 2000
model Cobra.
