Ok, this is totally hypothetical but...

There seems to me to be a gap, a big gap, between the $60K and $100K sports car markets. I was thinking about this and thought If I was looking for a $70K sportscar, what would I buy. Then I realized I couldn't think of any. I mean I wouldn't buy a $55K+ Boxster S 'cause that's basically what I've got. Seems I should get more than 0.2s per lap for nearly double the money. The 911 is better, some may disagree, but it's closer to $100K by the time you add seats and such.

So assuming a reasonable increase in income and a divorce and I'm looking for something for say $70K to replace the S2000, what would I buy? Help me out, there must be something I could get well equiped for $70K which offers more than what I've got for $35K.

M5, different kind of car but a great deal for $70K.
NSX.
ZR-1 (not 06) Vette.
Lotus Esprit Turbo.
Mercedes E55 AMG, probably too different.
Mercedes S500.
Viper.
Used older Ferrari.
Jaguar XKR.

sadly the M5 is a lot more than $70k (as with the 911 - once you buy it - both list at almost exactly $70k). the NSX is around $90k. hmmm... it's a good question. why IS there this gap?

perhaps the rumoured M3 with the M5 v8 dropped in it? otherwise i think it would be a used car or a heavily modded cheaper car (or a combo of the two - do i hear supra tt?).

It's probably going to be more pronounced when the RX-8 and the Nissan Z come out (rumoured to be below US$30,000). Comparable cars in the $40-50,000 are sure to compete, at least with base models.

Actually, the M5 is around 70k. I remember a young guy buying one from my dealership I worked at and the total price (minus tax, registration, etc.) was just a tad under 70k.

There is lots to choose from in the $70K range, especially when you dip into the "previously driven" market.

M5's list around 70k, but alas they sell for close to 90k (in the Boston area)... Otherwise one would be in my parking space as we speak...

malachi and munch, the M5 is like the S2K. Be patient and look hard and you can get MSRP. Hell, I wasn't patient and got mine no wait in the mid 70's.

I guess I will be the first one to agree with C3.
I think the next step is the modena (or 911 turbo if you like that one more)
I don't see any reason for anything in between.

Hey C3 still taking notes?
O.K. here my 2Cents: Since double the money for 2X(fun factor) don't exist, untill Honda produce the S3000, or the new F Jag, be a TWO-STOOK person (a first?), keep the red for mods and weekend fun and get a silver/red with the hard top for more formal applications.
BTW, more income yes, but divorce is not going to make you richer...
