I'd actually thought about that prior to reading this article. There will more than likely come a time when this will be an issue in this country. I think it's important in this case for the insurance companies to differentiate the types of modifications done to a car. Many of the mods are designed to AID the performance of a vehicle and have been documented to do just that (good coilovers, brake upgrades, stickier wheels and tires, et. al). Those kinds of mods are a far cry away from the 26" spinners that destroy the stock vehicles handling and braking dynamics.

I also understand any kind of mods may increase the car's attractiveness to thieves, but many of the owners taking their cars to that level have already installed security systems. Insurance companies already give a discount for having features like this on any car, so that needs to be taken into account when quoting a policy. I could go on, but I think the point is made.

This is an especially important concern for the majority of the members of this site. We have a lot of modified cars in our ranks, and this could become an issue in the not too distant future.

Indeed. I remember a few years back my dad got a letter from State Farm saying that "any" modification could potentially void his insurance, but they were really vague about what that meant. I don't know what it's like elsewhere but by law you have to have insurance, so they can basically do whatever they want.
