MP3 Player Options
If you aren't sold on Ipod, and you're going to buy a different model anyway, i'd look for a player that can play .wma's. That way, if you want to, you can subscribe to a monthly fee service with unlimited music. Just a thought.
As a side note, I have an Ipod Shuffle and my fiancee has a 4gb Ipod Nano. Both are awesome.

If you want to get the wife an mp3 player, it might as well be some sort of iPod. Besides hearing some people complain about them, they are almost universally considered the best mp3 players on the market by tech journalists, magazines, consumer polls, etc. Unless you have some sort of grudge against Apple, I'd probably get that Shuffle - it is great for working out with.
