Name my kid.

Also laws regarding names are mostly handled at the local level, so I hesitate to generalize, but I've never seen a real law stating that an infant has to be named before leaving the hospital. That said, they will definitely give you a very hard time if you try. Because of that most people believe it is a law.
David
Dan
Are ya looking for a first and a middle name for boy and girl or just a first name?
Since your wife is a doctor, how about naming your kid with a first name starting with an M and a middle name starting with a D?
M.D. Chen
boy - Maxwell Daniel Chen
girl - Meredith Danielle Chen
This way, you get your wish of having Dan in the name plus appealing to your wife witht he tribute of M.D. and you have first names that can be shortened, Max or Mere

My parents did that to me....but to their chagrin, I didn't become a doctor.
As far as the not so common names go, sure the kid will be made fun of at that very young age, but later on, they will appreciate their name much more. If you look at it objectively, the insults will last 2-5 years (grade school) versus 90 years (the rest of their life) of having a cool name.

Evan Chen - babynames.com says it means "g0d is good", it's actually "g0d is gracious". It also means "young warrior". It's gaelic for John. Of course I'm biased.
I know I'll name my first girl, Sarah. Sarah Chen doesn't sound too bad.
I'd stay away from names that start with an "I" or a "B" (I Chen = Itchin, B Chen = Bitchin) you don't want to scar the young buck for life, would ya? at least not such an early stage of life.

A girl in my high school had the last name of June so of course her parents name her Apryl Mai. Thats just not right.
All I suggest is to make it easy to read, spell and pronounce. My name is Kalan but noboby can pronounce it or spell it (its pronounced Alan with a K) and it stinks to have to correct people all the time.
For the record my favorite names are Ross Alexander, Bryon, and Jack for boys, and Majandra, Louisa, and Amelia for girls.
Have fun!
