When we were in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, public restrooms had two toilets, a "western toilet," which was a toilet, and an "eastern toilet," which was a raised platform with a hole in the middle.

The eastern toilet is "natural" but actually less efficient in performance as the person in use of the eastern toilet cannot use gravity to assist. And the unfortunate result of this inefficiency is a bulging pair of eyes and a glowing red face in a typical toilet session.
