you read it on the palm pilot..

 

This is only a guess. But I think what it does is the laser in the unit, will read the movement of your finger (the reflection of the laser on your fingers or typing utensil) and calculate the approximate distance. With that "distance", it will process the info and translate it to a number, letter, or symbol.

This is, of course, only a guess... That's how I would have invented it.
