If you have money, get a Specialized mountain bike.

I have "it's a sketchy economy but I still want to buy a bike anyway" money

There aren't too many Specialized bikes listed on the used market locally, and it seems they're a little pricey new at the local shops. Maybe in the future when I know what I like and want, I'll buy online at a decent price and get it assembled locally.

as far as the rear shock goes, most lower end duel suspension bikes do not have an adjustable rear shock. And with it being an off brand it might take you a while (and cost quite a bit) to find a locking rear shock that will fit.

Meh Maybe I'll just replace it with a metal post with holes on either end to bolt through

Actually I wonder about that...perhaps the hinge for the suspension on the rear wouldn't be up to taking all that abuse and pounding, as it's really only meant to be a shaft for pivoting to putting the force onto the shock.

You'll be fine. You'd be surprised at how strong the frame can be compared to the forces on it. Just make sure any fabrication you do is of good quality.

I guess from reading all of what you want and the money you are ok with spending I'd call around and see if you can find a NEW 09 SPecialized Rockhopper in about a 19 inch frame (I think they even make 21") and see if they will price match an advetised price of $500.

You get good shimano components, light bike, with front lockout fork. If they won't price match, ride a 19", see if it is your correct size and then see if someone will ship one for a price that suits you. I can't tell you how happy I was to get the one I bought for $400 except for they only had it left in my least favorite color but beggars can't be choosers.

Mine is probably not easy pickup with one pinky light but its easy two finger light. If you don't plan on real hardcore trail riding then even a lockout rear shock is serious overkill. The Rockhopper also comes in base and competition which has disc brakes. Never rode the comp because it was $200 more, but even the standard brakes can throw you over the handlebars pretty easy if you hit them hard enough.

Well, to be honest, because I immediately disregarded your suggestion of a bike that I thought was going to be the same kind of bmx crappy turd of a bike that I had when I was 9

I just looked it up and it's not a crappy bmxer, so now I'm going to do a little more research!
