I was meaning spend $700 on a (lightly) USED bike. That means it was around $1k+ new

There aren't too many Specialized bikes listed on the used market locally, and it seems they're a little pricey new at the local shops. Maybe in the future when I know what I like and want, I'll buy online at a decent price and get it assembled locally.

Weighing 240lbs, you'll crush it like a tin can. Well, probably not at first, but that shit is going to break eventually under so much pressure.

Well, my practical dream build would set me back around $1100 before shoes, spandex, helmet.

Guess I'll be buying a used one for now

I got my Gary Fisher Mamba 29er for $460(50% off retail). It was new, but a leftover 09 model. Any bike shops around you that have left-over 09's will be very interested in selling them.

Start calling around and looking for 09's in a 19" frame

Dood. Don't get a dual suspension. They are tanks and rob your peddle power. I had a dual and got rid of it. Sub 20 lb hardtail ftw!
