I too asked the General for a camera recommendation, and as it turns out, I had gotten one of the good ones! I got the Olympus C3030Zoom, and I got it for $549 from a web retailer called the Digital Etailer (www.digitaletailer.com). Michael told me that I got a better price on it than he can! Anyway, the camera ROCKS and the price was phenomenal. The only thing I recommend to add to it is an additional memory card. I took the pic in my avatar with it, as well as a host of others. If you want to see more pics, PM me and I'll link you...

I have a Sony DSC-S70 that I love if you are looking for a slightly higher end camera.

Do a search on line for current prices as I bought mine late last year.

I was lucky, I didn't know anything about digicams, so I wasn't confused by all the digi's available. I paid about $250 and from picture to computer is less than 30 seconds. I don't have near the printer it would take to make "picture quality" prints, so this camera was just for the Net. Serves it's purpose.

The thing about digital cameras is they evolve very quickly. In a year, you will be able to buy something far better and far cheaper than whatever is available now.

I suggest you buy as little as you really need, and resist "upgrading" to get something you think you might want "down the road".

"Down the road", just hand down your camera to a relative and buy another one.

Also, all these multi-mega-pixel cameras are great if you want to PRINT your pictures. If you want to use them on a on-line photo album or web pages, 800x600 resolution is all that you really need.

I bought a Kodak DC 4800 Zoom a month ago for $489 - $100 rebate which is over now. It is a 3.1 megapixel camera and the chepaest I could find. I am quite satisfied with it but I am no camera expert and this is my first digital camera.

I also opened a thread at that time asking for the advice so you might want to check that out as well.

Once you have decided on which camera you want to buy, you can use the following sites to find the cheapest online store.
www.shopper.com (owned by cnet)
www.mysimon.com (owned by cnet)
www.dealtime.com

From cnet operated sites, you can also find reviews and user opinion on most cameras. (not all that easy to find....but it's all there)

Last month I got the Olympus C3000 Zoom. I did A LOT of research. Its a 3.3 megapixal that takes smart cards. Even in the lowest quality its great. I love being able to set it down, get next to the person I want to be in the photo and press the remote and snap the photo! You can take mini 30 sec movies with sound, pics with 5 seconds of sound. You can also do a slide show on your TV set with the remote - Many many options.

Olympus makes great cameras!
