Need advice on digital cameras
What is your budget? I got the new model of the Sony Mavica with the 8cm CD storage. I can store over 100 photos or movie clips on a CD. I picked it up from CompUSA for $999 the week after it went down from $1299. The prices are the same at each store. The quality is excellent and it has very good options and is easy to view the photos since they are all stored in *.jpg and the movies are *.mpg. The resolution is 1600x1200 by default but you have many options and can take it down to 640x480 to save space.
At S2Kdays I asked the General the same question. Since I'm not a computer genius, I wanted something that was plug and play. I had an Olympus film camera and was happy with it for years, it just so happens that the General works for Olympus. He recommended the D100, and I couldn't be happier. Inexpensive, easy to use, plug and play. If you're looking for a camera on a professional level, give the General a hollar, he's very knowledgable and very nice.

Budget is going to be the first big decision.
Digicams come in flavors from the 640X480 freebies to high end 6 megapixel slr professional camera selling for $4K.
I own a Fuji S1, SLR. It takes incredible images and I'm very happy with it, but something like that is not for everyone.
I would recommend the Nikon 995 as an excellent high end megapixel camera. Price is less than $1K.

I just bought an Olympus c-700 and I love it. It was $600, but well worth it. It's a 2.1 megapixel with a 10x optical zoom. My advice to you is determine a budget and then go to your local store and play with all the cameras in your budget. You'll be able to narrow it down to a few.
canon S100, S110 and S300 (very popular because of its size, it's as small as a credit card and is 1" thick...maybe less)
Olympus C2020, C3030, C3040 (very good picture quality)
Sony Cybershot DSCS70 ( nice glass lense)
Nikon Coolpix 950, 990, 995 (cool looking and good picture quality)
Canon G1 (big, but full of features)
I picked S100. I may trade up to S300 for 3X optical zoom.
The size serves me better than any other feature. I don't print pictures, so resolution higher than 2.1 m pixels is useless to me.
I may also pick up C3040 just because of the Tetra underwater housing availability.

If you're on a limited budget, have I got a camera for you. The Kodac DC3400 works great and runs about $400. It has 2X optical zoom, 3X digital zoom, 2.1 million pixels, blah, blah, blah! It takes great closeups, too.
