Just realize their harmless. I'd understand a fear of sharks, snakes etc.. but a cock roach? Their more scared of you, then you are of them...Just squish the useless things whenever you see them

What's the name of that giant South American one? The one that can be like three feet long or something? That thing is scary.

So do you have any clue why you might be scared of them? Maybe if you realize why they are scary you can develop a way to not be scared anymore.

there must be an evolutionary reason why we are scared of roaches, spiders, rats, etc. disease carriers?

Thing is, it sounds like this is an irrational fear. Many people would talk themselves out of their fears/anxiety if they could.

There are various ways to treat this kind of anxiety. 8D was right to mention one of those ways (gradual exposure) and it's a particularly good one IMO.

Because they are ugly. Potato bugs freak the hell out of me for that very reason.

Cockroaches aren't too fond of us either. If they ever touch a human, they immediately will flee the scene and go 'wash' themselves. Apparently they find us as well...

I hate it in Houston in the summer when cockroaches will congregate on the steps to your house. They're friggin 6 inches long! I'm not sure if my childhood experience has anything to do with my fear, but one crawled right over my foot and I turned into a pussy.

So far, one suggestion is gradual exposure, which I always wanted to try but everytime I was close to one, I ran and screamed like a little girl. Have you seen a grown man run from a little bug and scream like a little girl? It's not a pretty sight. Everybody laughed and made fun of me. So why am I so fearful of them? I don't know, from the way they look to the speediness of their runs. I realize they are basically harmless, in that they don't bite, and that I'm a giant that can crush them like a fly, but boy, seeing one is enough to grab my mother and throw her at it.

For a picture, click on the link in my first post. That's the very kind I'm afraid of!!!

I've heard of hypnosis that works for some people. What do you guys think? I'd really, really like to get over this fear because sometimes I go to warm climate places that have roaches, and I'm scared to death, usually losing sleep over it. It's a wonderful thing that my house doesn't have any, even if it's turned upside down and inside out. But I live in the cold/cool climate, so maybe cockroaches do not thrive in such a climate.

ah good ol' cockroaches. anything i have a fear of and i know is harmless, i just block out the fear. if it's there, just ignore it as best as possible.

cockroach story #1: taiwan has big, flying cockroaches. i had no idea they could fly. boy do the scuttle up the blinds fast, too.

cockroach story #2: when i was in college, we gathered up $42 for a guy on our floor to *eat* a cockroach he'd caught in his room. yeah, sick. a big one, but not a flyer, ha. so. about 20 of us are packed in his 3-person corner room, all waiting to watch him eat. as he tries to get it out of the container, it accidently falls to the ground -- next thing you know, every single one of us spectators (including big football players and a track star) all jump and cling to the sides of the walls, jump on desks, on the beds, basically try and get as far away as possible. not the guy though, he gets it to climb on a knapkin, holds it over his open mouth, and proceeds to chomp down on that sucker. that was nasty.

cockroach story #3: there are so many in taiwan, everyone has roach killer sprays at home. it's crazy, you spray a bunch of that crap on it, and it stops moving. come back a little later, and the thing is dead laying on its back with its legs in the air. they *all* die like that. strange.
Haha. I'm in Taiwan now. I've seen some big, mean ones down in the parking garage! Some do fly and it's a horrifying scene. Some move very slowly, probably a female carrying like a billion eggs.

Sad to think that these critters will outlast humans.
