Default Need help with the Radeon 9800 Pro....Please!

I've tried to find help on so many websites I've lost count, that's how desperate I am to get this issue fixed. Hopefully I can get some help....

I really can't figure whats going on with my FPS. I just recently upgraded from the Radeon 9200 128 MB to the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB and the only difference I've noticed in the game I bought it for (counter-strike:source) is my detail setting being able to be set to medium instead of low. Also the resolution went up to 1024x..instead of being at 800x600. I have disabled Vsync, and the AA and AF have been turned off. Well, there really wasnt an option to turn it off completely, just setting it to 2x or checking the "application Preference" box. (I just left the boxes unchecked so I guess both are set at 2x, only because this made the game a little less choppy). I have turned off Fastwrite.....updated the chipset for my mobo as well as my video card (4.12 catalyst ATI drivers). I am still stuck at about 50-65 fps MAX when NOTHING is going on, which is the same as my 9200 card. And i drop as low as 20-30 when firefighting happens. My fps_max is set to 300. I cannot figure out why i cant stay in the range of 70-80 fps constant. I expected a somewhat improvement when i switched the cards, maybe i was wrong and should accept the low fps even with the 9800 pro?

Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ @ 2.09 GHz
512 MB ram
9800 pro 128 MB and all updated ATI drivers

Thanks in advance for any help....

Did you clean out your old driver. I dunon if this applies to Radeon family to Radeon, But if you switch from ATI to Nvidia or Vica Versa the same things happen try uninstalling your driver and use driver cleaner and try again? Hope this helps if not sorry

You need another entire gig of RAM for starters.

Have you gone in to your BIOS at computer startup and changed the video card settings there? Changed AGP to 4X and Video Card memory to 256MB? Did you download the new GART driver for the Radeon off of ATI's website?

Also, the new catalyst drivers available are 5.4 catalyst ATI drivers. Where are you getting 4.12 from?

1. chipset drivers, be it nvidia, via, or SIS. The GART is crucial and it needs its own driver.

2. more ram. with 512M, you are swapping a lot and it soaks up cpu power.

3. agp aperture in bios to 256M

4. catalyst 4.12 is certainly not optimized for HL2, CS:S!

even with 512 ddr ram he should be fine, it wont cause him to dramatically bump up from 20-30 to a smooth 60fps. Its gotta be your drivers, or your CPU isnt being cooled well enough or your video card is running too hot. But like someone said, 4.12? thats waaaay outdated, check the site for the newest drivers.

Alright I can REALLY relate here. I went from a 9200 to a Sapphire 9800 Pro. I get about 40-60 fps when playing on a 40 person server.

I have a 2600+ Barton

and 1 gig of Samsung 3200 ram.

Update drivers, keep things closed and I would honestly turn off AA.

You need every bit of extra when playing CS:S.

Only 3-4 guys on the screen at one time on HL2, so thats when I would up the graphics.

Hey guys,
I have been messing with my system for the past week and a half....arrrrggghhhhh!!!!! This is really frustrating me....

Christople, you said you get about 40-60 fps when playing on a 40 person server.....thats what i get on a 20 person server...I have AA off, and ALL updated drivers for video card and chipset...

After all the testing that ive done, I do not believe its my game settings. Its prob got to do with either my lack of ram or needing a strong Power supply (currently at 300W).

Help!!!!!

My power supply is some no name 350. I also have 1 gig of ram doing dual channel. PC3200 on up allows dual channel. My 9800 Pro requires a power plug in on the card. Maybe try just making sure everything is connected right. It also could be the server you play on for lag = fps drop.

The 40 player server I play on is called, Moongamers.net look for Uppity thats me. LOL

Defrag hard drive, from a program called Ccleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com It's free and I was able to get rid of 1.8 gb of useless stuff programs left behind.

I don't think you need anymore than 300w of power, but you never know. If you are overclocking it might be zapping the power going to the video card.
