Default Need a new pond filter?

So my pond pump started making a sucking sound and I went to check it out - apparently the big, rectangle filter thing is gummed up and now I need to know what to do.

Can I clean the filter? It looks like a large 2" thick rectangle of mesh - 14"x20". Can I replace it? Do I need a specific filter?

I'm going to have to go and see what model anything is (it all under water right now).

post pics if you can.

Most pumps that I know of have removable filter media, that can be cleaned and or replaced.

Here's a pic - I'm going to go at it with a hose and see if I can clean it out.

Yummy!!

from you pic I think it can be cleaned with just a bit of pressure and regular water. Once cleaned I would take it to a place that sells pond equpment and see if you can get a spare one.

Thanks, I took a bristle brush and brushed off the slime layer, and it seems to be back to working fine, but I figure I'll need a replacement in the future. I have a pond guy coming over Friday to take a peek.

Dont clean it with regular water, rinse it out with pond water as cleaning it too much with clean water will strip the bacteria that is esential to the pond.

I change my filter media every year in the spring with the uv lamp and always let the new media sit in the pond for about a week before putting it in the filter housing.

I don't even think there is a UV lamp - can I add one to an existing power line for a light lamp?

water has to pass through the UV whether inline or in a contained canister with filer media.

Okay, so assuming I have one, what needs to be done to maintain it? Would a UV filter typically be found in the main part of the pond or possibly in the line that goes from the pump up to the waterfall?

Are UV filters lights? Other media?
