I just got Roadrunner cable access at my house, and I have two other roomates. The plan is to run two network cables to their computers, as well as one to mine. The modem is currently plugged into my computer via the USB port. What kind of router do I need to be able to split the connection up and keep one IP address?? Thanks in advance!

Linksys sucks nuts.
Go for a netgear 4 port with firewall.
They seem to have better connectivity. Well im speaking on behalf of my T1 in the aparment. The Linksys kept on dropping my signal no matter what setup i was using. On the other hand.. I had the linksys BEFSR41 and it worked without any problems at my old house.
So its really hit and miss

 

Go Linksys. I've never had a problem with any of the ones I've worked with. I require them before letting my users connect to my network, so I've supported about 25 just for work alone not counting personal stuff and side business. Never had any issues.

You may want to consider the wireless version while spending the money. It has 4 physical ports as well so you don't need to buy wireless cards for one located close to the switch.

 

Thanks guys, guess I'll shoot for linksys. I'm not worried about a wireless network since the modem is staying in my room (they have to run the wires).

So with the Linksys, will I plug the cable into the router, or the USB coming off of the modem??

 

You will need to make sure that you modem in not USB. It will need to be Ethernet. It may just be a USB converter on the end of an Ethernet cable. If not, you'll need a different modem.

BTW - you still may want to make them pitch in the extra $$$ for the wireless.....it'll keep wires off your floor.

It will go like this:

Jack-->modem-->linksys-->computers

Follow the setup guide with the linksys. It's pretty easy so don't get scared.

 

I'm not scared, but I'm confused because of the modem. The modem is connected to the wall by coax cable, and then a USB cable comes out of the modem into the computer, there isn't a converter on it....

 

OK....that means you will need a different modem. Are you leasing this one from your provider? If so, they should be able to give you a different one. If they give you a hassle just tell them all your USB ports are used up or something like that.
