For those of you who are older and wiser, I am 23 with a new job of 6 months just out of college.
I am paying a bunch for an apartment now and was looking into buying a home or buying a new car.

I really really want a new car my old Saturn is OLD, OLD OLD OLD!!!, but I am paying a lot for an apartment and I am not getting anything for it.

So here's the question... I am young and handy with a hammer. Should I buy a fixer upper or a new car? Homes in Cincinnati are cheap so 3-5% down isn't very hard at all.

An 02 S2000 can be found for $22-23k...

What have your experiences told you?

Edit: When I say Old, I mean 180,500 miles old, but she shows no sign of dying any time soon so I have no reason to think that she will soon.

Buy a fixer-upper first. Definitely.

Get the house first then the car. Try to get a two family, fixed it up and rent one of the unit out. Then you should be able to get the car.

Do the house first and if you really want a car, use 1st or 2nd years equity to buy your car.

House. If I had had half a brain when I was 23 and had bought a house, I'd be in a lot better shape than I am now... i.e. still no house.

I can only repeat what others have said here... it took awhile (32 years) but I finally got a house and it's WAAAAAY worth it!

If I didn't have a '65 mustang, '96 VR6 Jetta, '96 Eclipse GSX, '70 Cooper S, '00 S2000, '02 WRX, '02 M3, '97 916, pair of '90 FZR600, pair of '92 CBR600f2, '98 R1100GS, '65 Bonniville, '74 CB400/4, '99 F650, '00 RC-51 and probably a few more cars and motorcycles I can't remember, I would've gotten a house that would've appreciated a whole lot (before the Bay Area boom) and have a few nice cars and bikes instead of just my '99 M Coupe now.

Do yourself a favor, get the best house you can, beat up the saturn somemore, and in a few years down the road use the equity to buy whatever car you want!

Good luck!

CAR!!! seriously go for the house as everyone else said. Since you say you are handy with a hammer, you can even have a MODDED house!
