The problem here is that by dropping the price so significantly only two months after the launch Apple has set a new precedent. Obviously the price of the iPhone was going to come down however I don't think anyone expected such a large slash so early on.

If you look at the history of Apple products the price breaks typically happen much later and at a much lower level.

I did buy the iPhone when it launched, but it was a lot of money to me. I am not walking around wiping my ass with $600 (and I certainly didn't spend $200 on my lunch today or any other day).

I think its safe to say that many people went ahead and dropped the $600 on the phone even though they thought it was a lot of money because they figured it would be several months before any significant change in price occurred.

I'm not asking anyone to feel sorry for me.

Was I upset at the price drop? Yes. Would I have gotten over it anyway had Apple not offered the store credit? Eventually, but with a soured view of a company I have been loyal to for 20 years. What impact does the store credit have on me? I have a renewed faith in a great company and I think the credit is a VERY good gesture on their part.

Exactly my thoughts and so well stated. Not all early adopters were people with lots of money, but wanted a quality product that was well designed and easy to use. Sure people argue all day that the iphone isn't revolutionary, but I had a treo 750 and for what my uses for a phone are the iphone is LIGHT YEARS ahead of what the treo was and fullfilled my desires.

Apple showed it's a quality company, unlike per se the oil companies that despite record prices don't give anything back and make record profits.

Those sons of bitches are very shrewd! They give $100 store credit so people will buy other things for much more than that.

That refund sets a weird precedent. Early adopters always pay a higher price. That's just the way it is. What a bunch of whiners!

On one hand, it's a VERY 'considerate' of Apple to do this for their 'screwed-over' customers.

On the other hand, those early-adopting customers just need to suck it up and quit being such whiney-assed babies.

The reason why they dropped the price is because it wasn't selling as well as they hoped it would.

where was this outreach to people like me that bought the Gen 1 iPod.

3 weeks later they introduced the 10 gig version and when people like me called up and asked for a refund or credit to get the 10 gig version the response was basically go @&$^! yourself.

Apple is to never get another single dollar from my household.

Wrong, it was outselling expectations.

I had so much trouble finding one in stock anywhere. They'd get a few and they'd be spoken for before they arrived. This was last week, not when they were first introduced.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! The internet is the internet, not some kinda the internet like I had on my other phones.

The phone internet isn't as fast as I'd like but it is as fast as any other phone internet. It automatically seeks wifi signals and jumps to them to up your internet speeds. It will never reach the speeds of a hard wired internet but it is amazingly fast.

I'm going back tonight to get another. Then we'll be a 2 iphone family.

I don't get this, company's update products all the time, anytime you buy something you run the risk that the next day the newer better one will come out. Ive never heard of any company's even considering a rebate. I bought a replacement click wheel ipod and 5 days later the color screen ones came out. I didn't call apple wanting a refund or credit, i delt with it and waited till the next one came out.

rant over

im ordering the 16 gig touch, it looks like a very cool device.

Wrong. If it's selling like hot cakes for $599, the you don't drop the price by $200. It's called supply and demand.

I have to agree. It was not meeting expectations. Here in town they didn't sell out the first day and they were always available on apple.com

They thought the'd be impossible to find. I think it they hadn't been limited to att they'd have sold more.
