Be nice to Cashiers
Thank you for posting this, Vagabond. I am a cashier at Walgreens... and they get friggen busy, I know exactly what you mean. I am very polite to my customers, and usually they are polite back. Walgreens has a new policy where we have to Card EVERYONE who buys tobacco products. Try asking a 40 year old for her ID when she wants to purchase some cigarettes. Some laugh it off, some blush and say I made their day, some get really, really pissed off and think I'm just wasting their time. It's my job, I'd rather get my paycheck than let you get your cigarettes. A lot of people are nice to me and I get some regular customers that I really look forward to checking out because I know it'll be one of the better encounters all day.
I -HATE- when people come to my till and buy all this shit, then don't have the money for it. C'mon people, learn how to add. If you only have $60 cash on you, don't go grabbing everything you want off the shelves. It'll hold up my line, and leave me with a shit load of go-backs at the end of the day. And if -You- get the wrong item off the shelf, don't expect me to leave my till to go get the right one for you. Read the coupon next time and get the right one. It's not my job to do your shopping for you.
That is just a few things that I've wanted to say to customers. I am a calm person and keep my cool, I'll politely tell them that I can't leave my till but I'll call someone to help them, in the meantime would they mind stepping aside and letting me help the next customer.
I have, however, answered the phone in the middle of helping a customer. I didn't think too much of it, I usually answer the phone, then relay it to someone on the floor, but now that I see that it might piss people off, I'll just ask them to hold before I ask if I can help them. Thanks for the pointer.

Whiteboi has some valid points there... Practically everywhere that I know of, a Cashier absolutely CANNOT leave sight of their till without permission. And at our store, London Drugs, if you leave your till, you have to lock the till with your passcode, lock the cigarettes cabinet, and make sure all things pertaining to tenders are in the blue till safe.
I myself hate it when customers grab stuff off the shelf without even giving a second look at the shelf tag and then bitch at me that it's the wrong price. For gods sake, read the shelf tags. They are there to inform you and make sure you get the right item, they are NOT there to make the shelf look pretty.
Also, one thing that hacks me off personally are people that tell me how to do my job. For example, our debit card readers are the new black verifone slimline readers. The thing is, they react better to fast swipes than doddering ones. So when I whip a person's card through the reader, they go anal and say "YOU GOTTA DO IT SLOWER!". For gawds sake, WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING! (sorry for the yelling) Let us do our jobs our way and things will go a lot faster for you and us.

i hate when ppl in front of me in line get to the register and don't have their money out, or are writing a check and wait for the total to begin writing the date and everything on the check. talk about a PITA. You know you're going to buy something, you KNOW you're going to need your money, you KNOW you are going to need to have that checked filled out. WTF happened to courtesey? If I am reduced to writing a check to buy something I at least start filling it out while my stuff is being rung up.
On that note, how about stupid jerks that go up to the ATM and stand in front of it to sign their checks, fill out the deposit slip (if one is needed), fill out the envelope, lick it, and then put their card in for the transaction. Why not step to the side, or better yet, take some envelopes home and fill it out before you hit the ATM.
