I have a friend who recently sold his 70's model Mercedes. I've heard he had some weird ideas about oil changes. This morning I had breakfast with a group of men - he was there. I asked him about his oil changes. "Oh yes," he said, "I changed the oil in my car once to get the dealers oil out. I put in ****** and never changed oil after that." When he sold the car it had over 200,000 miles on it!

Needless to say, I was shocked. We talked more. As it turns out he did change the filter every 12,000 miles and added a quart of the "super-brand" at that time. It was also brand ******. This friend does sell the brand, but the only way I learned this was by asking. I'd not consider him what I call an "Oil Evangelist." He's almost a normal guy!

I've seen the car. I can testify to the fact that it probably wasn't washed since it was new either. The car seemed to be poorly maintained, but it was still running every day and running reasonably well.

I change my oil every 2,500 miles - even using Mobil-1. But I am doing one thing right. I'm using the ****** brand oil filter. I did read about tests on filters and decided it was the best. I didn't know my friend was a dealer, so I didn't even get the filter from him.

I'm just thinking this afternoon, am I wasting my time and money or what? Wonder how my S2000 will be sounding after 100,000 miles without an oil change? I'LL NEVER KNOW!!!

I think your wasting money on changing your oil that frequently. Many studies(i.e. Consumer Reports) have been done, & oil maintains its properties well after 5000 miles.

It's Amsoil. I didn't want to mention it for fear that someone would think I'm an Oil Evangelist! I'm not sure, but I think it is one of the few marketed by the Amway method. It may be a fine oil, but I sure have heard some unbelievable stories - this one, I just happen to know, is true.

By the way, I don't sell any brand of oil - or anything else for that matter!

Yeah, what brand of filter are you talking about. Also, it fou change the filter, you pretty much have to change the oil too, since the oil will just come out of the filter hole if it isn't drained.

Hi MarS2K,

Filter also was Amsoil. I just ordered three of them for my S. I'd read surveys on filters and it rated very high. I don't know about the oil running out, but I'm sure my friend did as he said. He did say that he'd lose a quart and would add a new one during filter changes. One more thought - he may have had the Amsoil separate filter that mounts in another location and could be removed without all the oil spilling. I didn't ask which Amsoil filter he was using.
