You can use the included AppleWorks, but I find it dated and not very competitive with MS Office. MS Office for Macs is even better than Office for Windows, and is the simple solution. iWork's Pages and Keynote are good though, and you can get good student prices on software.

Gateway has a great model at best buy right now, 3800+ AMD wide screen ( a little heavy) <$600 at the time.
Should still be there somewhere.

Especially if she's not a techie, she's going to keep wondering why she can't open certain files and do things that every PC can do.
That is unless you think she's savoy enough to realize that you can't run the majority of programs on it.
As for viruses, just get her a virus program with it, problem solved.

that was harsh. but unfortunately, a lot of people buying computers are morons. i'd say half of everyone buying a mac or a pc is a moron.
i assume this girl is just the average girl who want to check myspace and email and word processing and not much else, so in all honesty, i think the cheapest computer would be the perfect one for her.
but i'd still rock a mac cuz its the sex. and i do graphics/video.
