The recent stories on NPR about the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign of Pope John Paul II and about the uproar in the Epiccopal (Anglican) Church over the ordination of an openly homosexual priest have proven one undeniable fact:

NPR's reporters do not know how to pronounce "scism".

To a person, they've said skiz-em. The proper pronunciation is siz-em, even as you don't pronounce "scissors" as skiz-ers.

The report on the Rock, Paper, Scissors world championship forcefully brought this shameful practice to mind.

I feel better now.

Seriously, that's like a world champion of Mercy or king-of-the-hill or something equally juvenile, IMHO. World Cup of Sled Jumping, anyone? How about Half-Block Bicycle Racing Hall of Fame? Rock-Skipping World Series? International Association of Frog-Blower-Uppers? World Mooning Society? National Society for the Advancement of Cow-Tipping?
