Default off to a bad start while dogsitting

My cousin and his wife left for a eurpoean vacation today and had already asked me if I would dog sit at their house while they were away. I agreed and when I stopped by after work and came in to feed their dogs, one of them was dead. I was in shock and called one of my co-workers who is also a very good friend of my cousin, and he came by to help. We ended up taking him to te vet where they will do an autopsy tonight to see if they can figure out the cause of death. If they cannot, then they will have to send samples off to a pathologist.

I am just in shock because this is a terrible thing and Simon was a healthy young dog. After talking with a few people, we have decided that it is better not to tell my cousin and his wife about this until they get back. This is the only vacation that they will get to have together for awhile because they found out a little over a month ago that they are going to have baby. I think it is best that I wait to tell them also. This way they can enjoy their vacation since there is nothing that they can do now.

Anayway, just had to get this strange event off my chest.

That's sad and an unbelievable stroke of bad luck. I wonder if they are going to blame it on you. Perhaps the dog died from being heartbroken when the owners left him behind.

I am very close with both of them so I do not think they will have any reason to think that it was something that I did or did not do. Plus, it happened sometime after they left this morning and before I got there to stay for the next two weeks. It is really a sad thing and it is going to be so hard to tell them. I am just really interested to find out what happened.

Thanks for your kind words.

Have they left the dogs behind before, or is this the first time?

They have left them before and either Angies parents or I have stayed with them. If the vet can find anything then I will know tomorrow, if not then it will be about a week for the pathology report to come back.

It's almost 2:00 in the morning and the vet just called to tell me that early indications of why Simon died are anaphylactic shock. She said that he had a lot of blood in his intestines and stomach and many of his other organs had some trauma. It is odd though that none of this has been showing up when he has done his business. She also informed me that he had been shot, still had the .22 bullet in his chest and that he had probably also been hit by a car.

My cousin's wife found saw him sitting by the road near their house last year and she finally picked him up after he had been there all day. He was a little thin but seemed ok otherwise and he got a clean bill of health from the vet. Obviously they did not know anything about his life before that but from this information, the poor guy had it rough. This is really sad because Simon was less than three years old and was a really sweet dog. Fortunately, the other two dogs are fine although they know something is wrong.

It is going to be tough on me for the rest of the month having to stay here without Simon and then picking up his ashes after we have him cremated. I figure that is the best thing to do so at least Russell and Angie will have that when they get back and they can do whatever they want with his ashes. Of course, telling them will be the really dificult part and I have to cope with this until they get back at the end of the month.

Oh well, I am going to try to get some rest now as it has been a really long and bad day.

Shot? WOW, that's strange. Feel bad for the little guy. He's in Dog's heaven right now.

Poor dog!
Shot!? Hit by a Car!? Picked-up on the side of the road!?
What a rough life he had before he met your cousins. Dogs have a strange way of not showing any pain...

Sorry you had to go through this ordeal. I'm sure that Simon was able to experience a great loving home with your cousins and the other dogs before passing away.
