But yeah, I believe it is related to the Akita in that it is a hunting dog, and probably shares some genetic characteristics, but they have TOTALLY different personalities, very, very polarizingly different.
Just a note, most Japanese dogs are actually from the Korean peninsula, many are just renamed Japanese ___ for nationalism sake. Old world cultural crap tends to go east to more east over there, not the other way around...
Also, Jindo gehs (dog in Korean) tend to be noticeably larger and have a more muscular yet slender build to them, unlike the Akita that looks a bit chubby in comparison. One way to tell the difference is that Jindos don't like anybody else other than their owner... hehe, very hard to keep as a family pet from what I've heard...
I'd like to own one one day, that is, as long as it's very well trained...

The problem of Jindos being over aggressive with strangers is most likely a problem of improper training and socialization. As with Pit Bulls, people probably treat it as a guard dog and fail to give it the level of nurture it needs to be a proper pet. To me, that's not so much a personality problem with the breed, but a problem of the animal's personality growing to fit the owner's misconception.
I understand why Koreans still feel upset about the events of the past, especially since the Japanese have failed to properly take responsibility for their actions. But they are in the past, and they really don't belong on this board, and especially this thread.
Yeah, I think you're right about the Jindos, since the families I know that owned them rarely had it socialize with other dogs, probably just better training would alleviate some of the problems of being to aggressive. The pit bull analogy is what got me, cuz there are some that are friendly, and others that are just killer, my neighbor's pit bull nearly killed my Maltese. However, unlike the Akitas, the Jindos are much more aggressive generally in nature and are much fiercer fighters hands down.
Regarding the national thing, I think Tan inadvertantly touched a sensitive spot, that's all. I know he didn't mean to cause harm, he's such a chill guy and all. I don't think Bill Clinton's response was very appropriate, but it's a shame to just marginalize him and past Korean suffering as well. I think his concerns were well justified, just did not have much tact.
ANyways, any pics of Jindos? They are beatiful specimens...

i had two jindos
the male one was really aggressive against people but very tender to dogs
the female one is really aggressive to dogs but very affectionate toward anyone
the best way to determine the dog's personality is to keep them trained when they are puppies...
