is it ok to put lower price on back of the title?
yeah I know it's illegal but what are the chances of getting caught?
how do they check?
have you guys done it before?
I don't mean putting 1k for a 10k car maybe like putting 10k for 15k car.
does DMV check every price?
I heard a lot of ppl around me do it and say it's ok

i got caught and had to pay the difference in tax..... i said i paid $15k for a $26k S2000.... they said it was worth $25k and told me to remit the difference or explain why i paid so little (and they wanted more proof).....
so I wrote them a check, considered myself lucky and moved on.

In Texas, it doesn't matter. They tax you on book value of the vehicle unless you have the car appraised by a registered appraiser OR you receive/give the vehicle as a gift.
Sucks! If you buy from a dealership, however, you can buy it for any price and that's all you'll get taxed for (since the dealership typically has an appraiser, so it's a moot point).

Most municipalities tax on their appraised value of the car, not what you paid for it, so its a moot point. Government specializes in taking peoples' money, don't think you're the first to try or that they haven't seen people try before.
You can argue with the municipality over the appraised value though, but don't look for big savings.

I actually bought a car for $3000 and they sent me the same letter they sent Scot saying the value of the car was closer to $9000 and then wanted either proof why it was less or to pay the difference. In my case the engine needed work, it needed paint, and a lot of other stuff so I sent receipts, they never sent me another notice about it.
Most states will tax you on the purchase price, or the current book value, whichever is higher.. you should be able to fill out a form detailing why the car is worth only what you paid for, and get the discount. "I got a great deal" won't cut it.
