Default is this old tale true?

i've often heard that you can how your wife will look like (i.e. looks and weight) in the future if you look at her mom and sisters? for those in long term relationships, is this true? say if her mom is obese, your wife will be likely to be obese too.

Obesity has a lot more to do with learned behavior than with genetics. Very few people are actually genetically predisposed to being obese. All of the studies I've read indicate that something like 95% of obese Americans are obese simply because they eat too much, and exercise too little. Everyone has a choice.

I'm sure there are some similarities. Sometimes I can't ignore that the mom is much cuter than the girl... at least that was the way it was back in high school, and when I probably had my fetist for a Mrs. Robinson.

But seriously... I look at the ankles! Does anyone else here? I think they tell quite a bit.

If she stands up in front of me in a bathing suit, and her thighs touch more than an inch or two above her knees,

I think once their rear has dropped far enough that you can see it from the front, there is no turning back.

Okay, JonBoy, you caught me. Nearly everyone has a choice.

literally have to completely stop eating to lose weight
Oh, literally? Suuuuure. Thermodynamics would dictate that someone who consumes only 1000 Calories a day, yet burns 2000 Calories a day, must be losing weight. Your 300 pound friend likely has a basal metabolic rate of something like 1500 Calories a day, just keeping all that fat 98.6 degrees.

People who can't lose weight are those people who have glandular or liver problems and can't digest their food properly. Those people have to eat an excess of food to keep nourished, and that ends up making them fat. If they ate less, they would be malnourished.

Regardless, though -- if you eat less than you burn, you're going to lose weight, malnourished or not.

As I said,
Very few people are actually genetically predisposed to being obese.
which your rapier-like intellect instantly rearranged to
glandular problems are genetically predisposed.
Duh. I believe I already retracted the statement you nitpicked, and said
Nearly everyone has a choice.
My response about thermodynamics was in response to this:
I know of a girl that is over 300 pounds that would literally have to completely stop eating to lose weight.
As we both now agree -- of course she can lose weight. All she has to do is eat less. She just won't be healthy while doing it.

So are you offering this as a suggestion for losing weight, or just saying it's logically valid?

The logic is fine, just a little impractical. It's like saying to a person that's got a sore foot that wants to get rid of the pain. "You can stop your pain by shooting yourself in the head". Yeah, it works, but they're dead (ie, a worse state than before).

You da man.
