Default omg, my coworker just got scammed...

haha. this really sucks and i feel bad, but it's kinda funny. a guy in our office just got scammed for a lot of money. he's not the smartest person and he's got all kinds of personal problems, so it figures this would happen to him.

anyway, he has a son in the military stationed in Arizona. he got a call from someone that his son was at a wedding in NYC, got drunk, got in a car accident, and is in jail for a DUI. they also said he hurt his jaw so his mouth was all full of gauze and he couldn't really talk. long story short, they got my coworker to wire $7000 cash for "bail." whats stupid is this was all a rush thing, and he never thought to try and contact his son to confirm this. turns out his son is fine and was never in NYC. he emptied his bank account and took out a loan on his credit card to pay for this and it's all gone.

what a dumbass! i would have left him in jail anyway. they don't keep you that long for DUI, and if he was injured, they could work out the medical bills later.

that is a pretty cruel scam regardless. Sorry to hear about this, I can sympathize with him cause if you were to get a call like that you may naturally not be thinking clear.

yeah, it's terrible that there are people out there that do this stuff.

i may be an ass for thinking this is funny too, but i wish you guys could see this guy. you'd understand more. he just seems to have a rain cloud over him constantly and it's like one #### up after another. his wife is in and out of mental hospitals. he's got so many problems with money and his home (he rents a trailer). his kids are always getting in trouble and he keeps bailing them out. we joke that one of these days we'll see a murder/suicide in the paper...

anyway, i found more info on the situation. these scammers initially called his crazy wife at home pretending to be their son and she fell for it. meanwhile Ron at work, starts seeing what he can do with the "bail" money. he emptied his bank accound of $4000 and wired it via Western Union to some person. not even a bail bond place, or a court or what...just some random girl. the Western Union person even said to him (no lie) "hey, there's a scam like this going on, you sure you want to send the money?" then they realize he's soft, they call back and request another $3000 for something else, which he writes a check from his credit card and sends to them. then they go back to him a third time, and that's when he finally caught on.
