omg, my coworker just got scammed...

I don't even know the guy but feel bad for him.
First, I would hope that the military would be onto this and tell all military personel to alert their families of the scam.
Second, I bet you that the scammer could be easily caught, there is always a trail. But I also bet you that since it is accross state lines and police always think they have bigger fish to fry, they just let it go.

It reminds me of an exchange on Seinfeld after Jerry was robbed.
Police officer after taking statement: "Ok we'll call you if we find anything."
Jerry "Do you ever find anything?"
Officer: "Nope."
I got scammed one time. Damn homeless guy told me he needed a dollar to catch the bus, sure enough i was walking back from eating dinner and here he is coming out of the liquor store with a bottle of whisky! man... i'm never falling for that one again.
