Default Only 68% of people buckle up...

So Im doing a report on car safety and such, and I came across a little factoid stating that only 68% of people buckle up...This number is VERY sad to me, if you keep reading on it states that 63% of all car accident fatalities are people who don't restrain themselves. I mean come on!!!

Dont know if this is a rant or if Im just trying to spread the word, but if you don't wear a seat belt, frankly you're a f#*king moron.

If people paid more attention to their driving and the traffic around them, there wouldn't be so many accidents and seat belts would be less necessary...

That's an impossible request. There are many factors causing an accident. Of course people need to be as careful as possible but that's much harder done than said. Seatbelt significantly reduce the risk of injury and people should be wearing it at all times. To those who end up dying as a result of not wearing a seatbelt, no one's there to feel sorry for you.

In no way do I disagree with you. In fact, I have a 6pt in my S because it's safer than the 3pt OEM.

That does not, however, mean that I believe we should have seatbelt use forced upon us.

Of course, looking at the statistics...if only 40% of fatalities were related to not using a seatbelt, then seatbelt use is closer to a 50/50 decision than it's made out to be. Perhaps if people were paying more attention and there weren't as many accidents due to negligence, seatbelt use wouldn't be as necessary

Darwin at work.

Seriously...you are an idiot if you don't buckle up. I don't care if the car has 20 airbags and a nut sack protection device...if you get in a wreck you can easily be thrown from the car. Of course wearing a seatbelt doesn't always mean you'll survive a wreck, as that all depends on physics.

lol, that's like asking people to try not to die. I'll let you slide on that one, but seriously common sense is appreciated on the forums

I remember not wearing my seatbelt for the first few months I was driving. It was high school, only loser's wore seatbelts. Then one day I just realized it probably wasn't worth dying for someone possibly seeing a two inch tan stripe running across my chest and started wearing it.

A few week later 4 friends of mine got into a car wrech at 35 mph. The driver and one of the guys in the back seat weren't wearing their seatbelts, backseat guy broke and arm, leg, bunch of ribs, neck problems etc, the driver broke both arms, lost an eye, some other shit. The two guys wearing seatbelts went to football practice that afternoon no worse for the wear. The one riding in back with the seatbelt was/is my best friend. His parents didn't learn he was in the accident until after practice was over that's how much of a non-issue it was for him.

How dare those fascist pigs try to make driving safer by requiring that we wear seatbelts.

It is so heinous, that I've stopped driving a car altogether. I am now driving a 1950 secret annex.

In all seriousness:

The seatbelt law is also about saving healthcare dollars. By NOT wearing a seatbelt, you are not just putting your own health in danger but the health of others by indirectly denying them necessary healthcare dollars when you crack your skull open because you thought wearing a seatbelt was fascist persecution. That kidney-transplant patient enxt door may have had his operation delayed because they had to pay for your dumb and selfish ass to get your body put back together.

What is the big deal? I've heard of this argument before, and it always astounds me.

BTW, my rhetoric wasn't directed at you but just all those against seatbelt laws altogether. My narrative does not indicate anything personal.
