I'm in the same boat as OP right now...
Kept it quiet from the friend though to see where things went, and now I'm realizing that I'm glad I didn't upset him and our friendship by bringing it up because I don't think the relationship with the girl will go anywhere.
I don't like being sneaky but it seemed like the best approach in this case to keep it from him. He knows we were hanging out as friends from time to time and flipped out over that, his response to us being anything more than friends would've been ridiculous. At least now she and I won't wonder about what it could've been like, we can go past it and just be friends.

I am currently married to my best friends ex. Now, it is different because they dated in 8th grade and we started dating 3 years later. But, obviously it worked for us and he is still my best friend. As previously stated it doesn't sound like you and this guy are too close. So my question for you is what are you waiting for?
