Default Opportunity for Relocation - Houston or Dallas??

Hi all,

My wife and I have opportunities to take jobs down in Texas. We could either chose from Dallas or Houston. We are 29,33 in age and like the outdoors. Looking at the Map I can see that Houston is close to the water. A big plus for us. Also what's to do down there??

We currently live in Connecticut on the shore of Long Island sound. I would especially like to hear from folks down there that relocated from the New England area. Also average prices for a 3000sq ft house in good neighborhoods (S2000 friendly). I like to weigh the pros and cons.

Thanks all.

Came from RI by way of Maryland. Live in The Woodlands, 35 miles north of city of Houston. 2500 sq. ft. home can be had in the range of $135k and up. $200k - $250k gets a lot of house. Plenty to do in our area, miles of bike paths, trees, lake, trees, restaurants, trees, shopping, trees, no flood problems, etc.. Check TheWoodlands.com for more info. Many other good areas in the Houston area. Very active S2k community every where. Plenty of outdoor sports available. Summer is about 6 months long and like the hottest, muggiest August day in Conn.. Been here 20 years now and have enjoyed all of them.

Just wanted to add to Pete's comments:

I live Northwest Area (Copperfield area), decent neighborhoods, good/great schools, parks, easy shopping areas, good resturants, easy access to all freeways. Bought my house (last yr) 2,800+ sq feet for $160K with some upgrades. But, there are plenty of neighborhoods in Houston.

Very Active S2000 community here. Just check out the HouStook Club forums.

Dallas!

As a business traveller, Dallas strikes me as much more sophisticated than Houston. Dallas is often accused of trying to be a New England-type city -- IMO, that's a good thing!

However, you'll have to pay a premium over Houston in real estate costs for the privilege of living there.

Dallas...

If for no other reason - TRAFFIC -

It is heavy in DFW area also, but not like Houston

I would not live in either area myself

Talk to STOVLdriven, they moved from the NE to Ft Worth recently. Ask them about sailing too, if that's what your interest in water is about.

Houston.

EDIT: Well, on second thought: Houston sucks. I'm just choosing Houston over Dallas because I'm a Houstonian... and I hate the Mavericks. They win too much.

You really have to live in an area for awhile to know what you are getting and what you are not getting.

I have lived in Dallas on and off for years and really think the only thing sophisticated are desires of a few leaders. Overall I find it a mismanaged sprawling area with little to offer except a big damn airport.

My goal is to relocate to central Texas as soon as I have an opportunity.
