I think that you can find as many detractors as supporters for each city. My daughter lives in Houston. It would take something more than an act of congress to get her to move. As some background this is the second time that I have lived in the Dallas area. First time was for 12 years, in Plano, and the second time, now 3 years, in Highland Village. Having grown up in Westchester County, very close to the CT line, I do have some understanding of the area. As far as boating the Gulf is about 180 degrees from LI Sound. The Gulf is bathtub warm in the summer and very shallow. Good breeding grounds for storms and due to it being shallow some very large swells.
I have to agree with some of the above comments that the Woodlands and Lake Conroe areas are very nice. Dallas area has a number of good sized lakes of which most are man made. Cost of living in either area is going to be comparable.
Houston is a little more cosmopolitan than Dallas, more humidity, rain, mold, roaches, and traffic. Dallas is a little more country, drier, hotter, and more mosquitos.

As stated above its not a clear cut choice.

Damn, Did you say ROACHES???

It is still not a definite move. Waiting to find out what the wife's work situation will do for her if they want her down there. She handles comodities trading in GAS and OIL (big business for you guys).

I am in IT, so to me I don't mind trying out a new area. Plus I can drive my S alot longer.

Thanks all for the info... I will let you know more as I get info...

Two kinds of roaches in Houston.........the kind that scatter when you turn on the lights, and the ones that sit down and watch TV with you (big-uns!).

actually, the roaches are quite sizey in Houston. I grew up there and well. We had a tennis racket that was used for swatting roaches. They are anywhere from 2.5-4" long and they fly. Newspapers are useless for defensive measures.
