Default pain in the neck.. whiplash! help!

hey all,

i just got a new set of rollerblades today.. went out for a little bit and was totally not used to the conventional brakes on my new k2's.. ive had rollerblade brand rollerblades with the ABT braking system before.. anyways, i tried to stop but i was spun around and i flew like 5' and totally ripped open my elbow and my hip.. not to mention jerking my neck back!

now this pain in my neck is killing me! i cant drive, i can only turn my head slowly, i cant watch tv in bed, argh!

what can i do to speed along the recovery process? ive been using icyhot, and holy sh*t does it burn! but damn does it feel good.

should i go to the doctor to see if i did any spinal damage? accupuncture? i'll try anything to get rid of this pain! i have a trip to six flags on monday.. i gotta get better!

thanks,
brian

Rest is the only thing that helps neck and back injuries (besides surgery anyway). Unfortunately, you can't do anything without using those muscles so you just have to take it easy until they recover.

if serious pain persists for more than a couple of days, see a physician immediately and have xrays done to see if there is anything seriously wrong with the neck. You don't wanna mess with a bad neck/back.

I'm not a doctor (though I've watched TV when actors playing doctors were on ), but I got severe whiplash in a car wreck once and can sympathize - though my other injuries were more serious, recovering from the whiplash was one of the more annoying, and actually painful, parts of healing.

In whiplash, basically your neck muscles get shredded. Typically they've tensed up for an impact, but when the force of the impact is very strong it bends the neck against the strained muscles anyway, causing severe damage. That's why if you can remember to do it, it's best to "go limp" just before the impact - the relaxed muscles will stretch more easily and harmlessly.

One of those padded neck braces would probably speed things along by allowing your neck muscles to be more relaxed while they heal, not having to support your head as much. Depending how severe the damage, expect the muscles to be weak/achy for several weeks. (Took nearly three months for mine to heal completely, but then I couldn't move my head at all after the wreck.)

Good luck.

Very often people find that either heat or cold will help.
Total rest is the best thing though until the worst of the pain subsides.
