Default Partial Solar Eclipse Tomorrow

A partial solar eclipse will be visible tomorrow from all of the US except Alaska and New England. It is actually an annular eclipse (from the Latin word "annulus" or ring) in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Unlike a total eclipse, not all of the sun's apparent disc is blocked out by the moon's apparent disc and a ring of the sun's disc remains visible at maximum eclipse. This is because the moon is further away relative to the sun than during a total eclipse.

In LA, the eclipse begins at 12:15 PM at the sun's lower right edge. Maximum eclipse, about 20%, occurs at 1:10 and the show is over at 2:12. Do not look at the sun with anything but a proper filter such as a #4 nuetral density filter (cuts down light 10,000 times). A #5 nuetral density filter is better (cuts down light 100,000 times). Looking directly at the sun, even for just an instant, can cause permanent eyesight damage, even blindness.

I will have my small scope and 9x63 super binocs set up at my house in La Crescenta tomorrow, weather permitting (40% chance of rain in forecast). All are welcome. Let me know if you're interested and I'll PM you my address.

A pretty good show in San Antonio tomorrow, quite a bit better than LA.

You're an Astronomy major (which is very cool, it's my big hobby -- I have an 8" Meade LX200). You have my permission to escape from your office for awhile.

Too bad were on like our 48th day of rain in a row here in Oregon. Which means that it is very likely tomorrow will be another day without seeing the sun.

I hate the weather here so much.

What's so bad about Riverside? I know absolutley nothing about it.

I'm thinking I'll probably be moving to San Diego within the next few years. I just can't stand it here much longer.
