anyways to the OP i would def. pick option 2 depending on How menial the job is. If its something you can still be happy doing (but not your dream job) than go for it. You'll thank me later when 1/4 of ur kids college is paid for and you have full benefits.

I would probably also choose job 1. As long as your spuse's job is secure and at that level of pay. 89k is a decent living for a family even greater for one person.

with that much overtime his dream job becomes hell b.c no matter what you do those hours are now not being spent doing things outside of work (spending time with your family; etc). Also Full Benefits for your whole family IS HUGE. Tell me how "happy" you would be if your at your dream job and your kid gets sick or your wife gets into a car accident and you have $20k medical bills. And if you want to buy your own health insurance its still pretty damn expensive. When i wanted to get my own health insurance it was almost $1500/month.

and a 1/4 of college is HUGE. that can range from anywhere between $5k-$50k. If thats nothing for you guys than good job.
5-50k vs and extra 30k per year? Like I said it's all about your situation and preference. Also, we don't know what kind of health care his spouse has available. Buying on your own varies too much from person to person depending on a lot of factors. for you it's very expensive, for me the exact opposite (compared to company provided options). I think the best route is to talk with his wife, see what they can come up with and what works best for the family. Also if you bought your own insurance, you wouldn't have to worry if your family got sick, you would still have coverage... Lastly if it's a dream job because it's something you enjoy doing, then would it really matter how much over time you worked? If it is your dream job for other reasons like status, pay (obviously not the case), or any other reason, I would have to agree with you.

@ joey I don't agree that money=happiness, but I will admit having less money than you need can cause a lot of problems and make you pretty unhappy. Either way, the money doesn't seem to be that much of a difference in this case.

see what im trying to say that even if it is your dream job if your working 70-80 hrs with OT than your not going to be that happy. you'd be happier than if you were working the same hours in job #2 but still not happy. I'd pick job #2 if that meant i made more $ and got to spend more time with my family. so that extra $30k comes with the risk of losing that happiness that your "dream job" gives you.

I fuhking HATE my job. Would love to find something at least tolerable. The something to be said about job security especially if you have a second earner.

100K with 25 hrs of OT a week with option #1.

On a side note, I did have a business before (3 times my current pay) and working 80-100 hours a week. Needless to say, I was extremely unhappy. I sold it and now, I just wanted some advice from an unbiased point of view.

Sure you hated it because you were effectively working 2 full time jobs.

WRONG

I used to fly airplanes, now I fly an airliner, full of living people who expect me get them from point A to B safely, flying a metal tube at 37,000ft at Mach B0, well the pay and benfits have gone to shit, so now I hate my ****** job

ALWAYS go for the pay, this way you can do the things you love on your days off
I'll agree with you, my dad has been flying for Delta for 20 years and he still loves flying, but the pay and management have overcome the love for flying.
