depends on how old you are...

stay with option 1 but live as if you're on option 2 and change jobs to something lighter in 5 to 8 years.

i agree with the others, stay at current job a little longer and save up, then move on. i doubt you can keep up 80 hours a week for another 20 years anyway without going nuts. out of curiosity what is it that you do now that requires 80 hours?? own some kind of small business?

Figure out how to make pay of option #1 with work hours and satisfaction of option #2.

if you're smart, work for 5 years in job #1 and save $500,000.

then invest the $500,000 get an average 10% every year. then live off the interest and/or get a part-time job.

after do some "consulting" or something.

that's what i'd do. i'd rather do something i love and get paid next to nothing that covers the necessities than work my ass off and have tons of crap.

I disagree. Bust your ass, hoard your cash, and THEN, work A LOT less, and enjoy life to the fullest. That's what I've been doing for the past 10 years. 10 more, and I'll be on a MUCH easier street.

So I was thinking about my career and was wondering what you guys would do:

1) Stay at current career and make b/w 120-170K working 70-80 hours a week. I am 80% satisfied with what I am doing but obviously have no real life outside of work (no kids or wife).

or

2) Move to another job making b/w 60-70K a year working 40 hours a week. But I would be 100% satisfied with the work. This career is more prestigous and wont burn me out after 20+ years.

Opinions? Anyone else go through what I am going through?
Those seem like 2 pretty drastic extremes. Wanting to find a job that demands less hours is an admiarable goal. But it seems to me that you should be able to accomplish that goal without having to take a 60% pay cut. There must be career options for you out there that offer a better compromise.

I recently changed jobs. I went from being a FTE working 60+ hrs a week at a large multinational corp to being a contrator at a smaller organization working 40hrs a week and paid hourly. I took a slight cut in overall compensation (maybe 10-15% less than before). But I am loving it so far. I'm home from work by 5pm every day. And I never have bring work home with me.

For me, the increased quality of life was definitely worth the slight drop in income in my case. But if I was facing a 60% income drop, my lifestyle would have to change drastically to accomodate that financial shock. And I'm not sure I would consider it.

Man, those are two rough choices. Personally, though, I'd go for #2 since I have a family (wife and daughter, with another kid on the way).

If I was single, I'd definitely stick with #1. Bust your butt, make your money, save and invest a bunch of that money, and then in five years kick back, enjoy what you've earned, and move to a less stressful job. If you then decide to have a family, you'll very much appreciate having put the hard work in before you had other more important commitments and priorities that require your time and attention.
