Wait a minute.... isn't California one of those whacked out states with all those ergonomics laws? I've been to our office in San Rafael and have seen some of the wackiness in person. Do some research and check it out. If not, go to your optomitrist and I'm sure he'll write you a note which your company can't ignore.

I work on people's PCs all the time at work and that's the first thing I notice when I sit down. I always ask them "does this hurt your eyes" and they think about it for a few seconds - like they are just making the connection - and answer "yes". I have not had a person say "no" yet.

My settings are at 75Hz, I have to override a safety feature in order to go any higher than that...my comp says monitor cannot handle any other than 60 or 75. That kinda sucks, though it doesn't bother me.

Yeah, all you really need to do is to get off of 60Hz. The problem is with fluorescent lights which also operate at 60Hz. They end up creating a flicker effect since they are both flashing at the same rate, but not at the same time.

I was always told 75mhz and above is fine. Anything lower and even if you can't tell, your eyes can see the flickering which will make you tired, possibly cause headaches, etc. This is a well-known issue in IT, I'm surprised they wouldn't just change it for you real quick. It's in your companies best interest to make sure you are comfortable while working to prevent fatigue. You might want to remind the IT supervisors or your own supervisor of that fact. Either that or set up a strobe light in the IT office and tell them this is what your screen looks like all day and see how they like it...

It doesn't matter for LCD monitors. You just go with the recommended setting. What matters more is:

Response Time: The response time of the LCD monitor is crucial for the gamers and movie buffs. Response time refers to updating of the pixel colours. Ghosting or trailing effects start to become evident when the response time slows down to 20 ms. One should definitely look for monitors offering 16ms or even 12 ms response time.

...aaaand how do I tell what my refresh rate is?

EDIT: scratch that, I sounded like a smart ass. I meant to say, "how do I tell what my response time is?
