Default Pets vs SUVs

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091220/sc_af...minganimalsfood

Apparently a dog has a carbon footprint roughly equal to driving a 4x4 SUV for 6,200 miles a year. That's probably less miles than most drive but that's just about what I put on my pick-up in a given year, at about 16 mpg.

I have to laugh at some of the comments, though:

But the revelation in the book "Time to Eat the Dog: The Real Guide to Sustainable Living" by New Zealanders Robert and Brenda Vale has angered pet owners who feel they are being singled out as troublemakers.
Now that there is a potential for blame for "global warming" (ha!) "resource depletion" to be placed on others with "unnecessary" luxuries and enjoyment, it's "unfair" because...

...Reha Huttin, president of France's 30 Million Friends animal rights foundation says the human impact of eliminating pets would be equally devastating.

"Pets are anti-depressants, they help us cope with stress, they are good for the elderly," Huttin told AFP.

"Everyone should work out their own environmental impact. I should be allowed to say that I walk instead of using my car and that I don't eat meat, so why shouldn't I be allowed to have a little cat to alleviate my loneliness?"

Sylvie Comont, proud owner of seven cats and two dogs -- the environmental equivalent of a small fleet of cars -- says defiantly, "Our animals give us so much that I don't feel like a polluter at all.

"I think the love we have for our animals and what they contribute to our lives outweighs the environmental considerations.

"I don't want a life without animals," she told AFP.
When it's THEIR enjoyment, rights, happiness, and personal choices that are on the line, the excuses come flying out.

We truly are a selfish race. No one wants to give up anything because everyone has a valid reason (even if it's "because I want to!") for everything they do.

Well that settles it, let's kill all the animals. Glad they figured that out for us.

Well, if you read the article, they advocate having pets/animals that "give back", including chickens (produce eggs) and rabbits (edible, and they reproduce quickly, so you can actually get a fair bit of food from them).

I've always thought a chicken on the couch would be a great idea. There's nothing more comforting than having a chicken bite you on the nose when you're down.

I read this article and I thought EXACTLY what you post. So, what if somebody's allergic to dogs and cats, and their Ferrari makes them happy?

Maybe when all of us give up everything we have, living in caves alone, then those environmentalists will finally satisfied.

Maybe not, cus even if we live in caves, we still have carbon footprint.

Bats live in caves! We can't uproot them out of their deserved spot in the world! Somehow this also sounds familiar...

As to carbon foot prints, now how is carbon removed from the atmosphere? Im sure if I gave the explanation and its culprit, it will be attacked as a tin foil hat.

Carbon, cigarette smoke, and large SUVs dont hurt anything or anyone, its all a tin foil hat!! Zig Heil USSA!!!!

But I do agree that humas are a selfish species and are a parasite to the rest of the world.

Id LOL if a super virus came up and just totally wiped us out together, because the best part would be all the cries and complaints about how its racist, unethical, offensive etc etc...

I really dont know what to think, I dont have my hands on all the scientific stuides about green house gasses and their effects. This itself is still a "Theory" without conclusive evidence. Now the most new media propaganda for the sheep is that the Green efforts are all a corporate scheme for profit?

So whos to say, im sure this newly unveiled propaganda will separate the sheeply and soapbox preachers, but to what degree?

The only comment that springs to mind is:

It should be fewer miles, not less miles.

(Oh, and I'm keeping my dog.

And my rabbit, and my cats, and my horses.

And I'm going to get a really big pick-up truck to haul my horse trailer.

Because I want to.)

Instead of flying to Copenhagen generating million tons of carbon dioxide, maybe those environmentalists can take a long long walk on a short short pier to eliminate their carbon footprints.

Hey, the fishes will have a nice meal or two. PETA will probably support that.

It is a win win situation.
