Cool thread. I've been "into" photography since the early 80's - in fact, I still have my old Canon A-1 (35mm) with a bag full of lenses and a box full of bulk rolls of B&W film L). Took the plunge into digital photog last X-mas when we bought our Nikon CP5700.

Dark Sub Rosa:

Do you have any of the 5700 accessory add-on "lenses" (the telephoto or the wide-angle)? Been meaning to try to check them out, but most local stores don't have them in stock. Would LOVE to get that new 16.7MP camera by Canon (saw it on a recent thread) but alas, I do not have a spare $10k lying around for my "hobby". This thread has me intrigued; might have to head to the basement to find some old negatives to scan and post here

Fave subjects:
Landscapes
Automotive
People (especially my wife/kids)

Want to try the IR photography - some good examples here. Looks like a COOL area to experiment in!

What's everyone's take on multi zoom lenses? Good or rubbish? Tempting to have one lens that can do it all - but quality wise?

My advice. Learn to use photoshop CE and you can't take another bad photo in your life.

While photoshop is great for post processing, photoshop can't correct a blurry, or overexposed, or uninspired photo. Among other things..

[QUOTE=naomi-sarah,Oct 19 2004, 12:29 PM]I think that the D70 is a good starting body for someone moving from 35mm to digital.

MyYellowHonda on the Australian Forums does a bit of photography. He has managed to get a few of his photos into some magazines and one was even used for marketing by a major tyre manufacturer in Europe.

I just read about your D70 Awesome choice! When I was committed to making the switch from 35MM to digital, I wanted as close-to-SLR as I could find without breaking the bank. Leave it to Canon and Nikon to hit the sub $1000 market this year with cameras perfect for that switch!

I jumped too early and had to go with the Coolpix 5700 as the best at the time for my needs. I'm very pleased with the 5700, just want to return to my SLR days...sadly I paid about $1000 for it, and will have a hard time justifying a "trade-up" when the street prices on 5700's have dropped to about half what I paid for it. I miss having an optimal lens option for different photo shoots.

You asked about a multi-zoom; in my A-1 days I found them useful for photoshoots where I was limited on what I could carry. It was great if I was shooting in the sunny outdoors primarily. Been a few years since I have seen what's available. Does the D70 have any good options you're considering? Do you have true-SLR lenses that work with it? (from your 35mm days, I mean.)
Hi Mendi! I can't use my 35mm lenses with the digital, because my 35mm was a minolta and a canon. Plus they were super super oldschool (think manual film advancing)

The kit lens (18-70) is pretty good for most things that I do, but I just find that the glass isn't fast enough.

Overall, I do like the digital workflow - especially shooting in RAW format, but I will bust out the 35mm to shoot slides on a nice sunny day. Nothing beats a polarizer and velvia 50

naomi-sarah... i got almost the same equipment as you are ...
just that i have another 60mm macro... awesome lens...

IMO ... the 10.5mm fisheye is nice... but the only thing that puts me off is that it's a DX lens... I shoot with film as well, and am already hating the fact that i bought the kit lens... i would probably go with the 15mm Sigma or 16mm nikon both are full frame...

these are done with the kit lens on a D70

a few with the boys in Toronto
