ALL PS3s will play PS1 games
The 60gb models had the PS2 hardware so they are fully BC with the PS2
The 80gb models had the PS2 graphics chip but the Emotion Engine was emulated via software. That's the model I have and the software bc sucks.
The last hardware revision dropped PS2 bc completely.

From the old 80GB to the new one, I think it's no card reader, 2 less USB ports, and no PS2 BC whatsoever. I'm sure someone else will chime in if I missed anything. It's basically like the old 40GB but with a larger HD.
If you plan on d/ling a lot of games, storing a lot of MP3s, pics, and videos on your PS3, then you might want more space. But I think pretty much everyone will agree that you might as well buy the smaller model and buy a much larger HD for about the same or slightly more than what Sony is charging for the 160GB.
