other than the hard drive and game, is there a difference between the 80gig and 160gig PS3's at best buy?
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id...=30&loc=KW-0887
I plan on getting the 80gig and upgrading the hard drive at some point, but I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be missing out on anything with the 160gig version. from what I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a difference...
sorry if this belongs in computers/tech, but there's more traffic in here and I need an answer in a few hours....

I dont think there is any hardware difference other than maybe the number of USB ports, etc.
If it were me, I'd get the 80Gb and add my own drive for half the cost of the price difference for a 160Gb

I wonder why they came out with a 160G...seems like overkill

I really thought that the 160gig would have more options other than a game I have no interest in. however, I can't check gaming forums from work, so I'm kinda in the dark at this point in time.....
If you can, try to find a first gen PS3.
They have the most backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games. It went downhill after the first gen 60gb's.
I got mine and upgraded the HD a while ago to a 120gb. Couldnt be happier

I posted here before that I think PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility is overrated (let me clarify, IMHO). I have a PS2 sitting here that hasn't been turned on for well over a year. Any PS2 game we've played and are done - once you fire up GT5, Uncharted, Resistance, any current RE, SH, LBP, MGS, etc., etc., you won't want to go back and replay anything PS2 related. I can't even imagine firing up PS1 games...
I will qualify this and say we don't play a ton of games, so if you want to burn through 4 or 5 games a month, you'll run out of PS3 specific titles and might want to go to the back catalog of PS2/PS1 games.
Current gen 80's (though there are a few previous gen still in stock) dropped the USB ports from 4 to 2 and removed the SD/MS card reader. All 160's are like this, as well as 40's (the latter not in production anymore).
However, our "40" is now a 320GB and I added a Nyko accessory to it that converts one of the USB ports into 3, and adds the card reader (for $18). So basically ours has the same ports as the older 80 (and first gen units).
Fun machine! Can't wait to start Silent Hill: Homecoming and for the release of Resident Evil 5! If you're into Horror/Survival type games, Siren is a terrific title that doesn't get as much press as RE, and it a PS3 exclusive.
Our machine gets a good amount of usage as a BD player and a media hub!

But if all you care about is watching movies and playing new games, I wouldn't worry about finding an older model.
BTW, I actually did play a PS1 game a few months ago (the original Metal Gear Solid) on the PS3. It was flippin' horrible, haha. I couldn't tell what I was doing or where I was going sometimes because of how pixelated it was.

well, I still have one of the slim PS2's, so I'm not too worried about backwards compatability.
