i have this idea for a special pen. problem is i have no idea how to turn it into a business. who would u try to contact or what steps would u take to get this into production and distribution?

on a different note, i've got an idea for a book, but don't know the process of getting it published. what should i do?

As for the book, you'll need to find the right publishing company for which you want your book to be released under. An agent will help a lot if this book is great. Don't be too naive though, or your agent and publisher might just screw you out of any $ you could make. You'll probably need a lawyer to look over the contracts, though they're probably standard for amateur writers.

 

contact investors if they think your idea is of any interest, they'll fund for your pen to go on sale and help fund everything needed...


another option is to go to a place and sell your idea, I was told to do that when i came up with a bad ass board game. I got lazy and just left the idea jotted down on my "idea book"

 

i think for the book, you need to join the Writers Guild and submit it to them first. that way you have it on record that it is YOURS so if someone tries to steal it. Also, they can give you a list of agents. I don't think it is very easy to get into the book writing business, but with enough determination I am sure you can.

Are you trying to Patent the Pen or just produce some? is it unique?

I have a contact at the Patent office who is awesome at searching the website. I thought I had a unique website idea until he searched it for me and found someone else had patented it 3 years ago, but never used it.

 

On the book, buy yourself a copy of this year's Writer's Market and follow the submission guidelines to the editors who represent publishers who would deal with your type of book. Do the research.

Copyright law does not require your manuscript to be published or otherwise registered anywhere for you to claim and enforce copyright. Worst-case it could be helpful, in a legal battle, for you to mail yourself a copy in a sealed box (like the Fed-X cartons) now so the post date could be used in court.

But manuscript theft is pretty rare until you are a best seller (e.g. The Davinci Code brought out a nut who claimed theft of the idea).

 

regarding the pen, i think you want to patent your idea first, then take it to a company and try to get them to buy it and produce it. if it's a good idea and you go to a company and just tell them the idea, they'll send you away and next thing you know your idea is in stores.

Talk to the guys at SCORE. They're retired business executives who work with the SBA to give free advice to small businesses.

I have an appointment with a couple of gentlemen from SCORE next week to discuss a business plan and a marketing plan for Bottom Line Gurus.

Ask the SCORE guys; they should have contacts for venture capital.
