policeman for a job
why or why not would u want to be a cop*
*=in a safe area where nothing bad ever happens. no shootings, murders, etc. starting pay around 55k, work 3 days a week. benefits, 3 wks vacation/yr + sick time.
and list any jobs you can think of that you get paid decently without working a lot, low stress, lots of vacation without an advanced degree. fun would be a plus (ie new car journalist)
thnx

I would not, and these are obviously my personal reasons.
1) Most cops seem to burn out and/or get into an "us vs them" state of mind.
2) I would feel bad enforcing laws that I ignore 100% of the time, such as traffic laws. To me, that's just revenue collection, and I wouldn't want to be an armed tax collector. You can't avoid doing it either, even though "there are no quotas". Yeah, right.
3) When you're not harassing motorists, you may actually have to see/do some seriously nasty stuff. One of my friends (Port Authority cop) was first on the scene of a suicide on the Ben Franklin Bridge. A woman jumped, but didn't clear the bridge. The body wasn't in one piece. The worst part was that her baby was still in its car seat in her car. That one haunts him.
4) The hours. I like being awake when the sun's up.
5) The fact that there are people out there who will kill you if they have to, or maybe just because they want to.

MWD Field Engineer
24 hour on call for 7 weeks, then off for one week. Base pay is $2000/month + $350 per day for every day you're in the field. They say I'd average 20 days a month of work. Two weeks vacation.
That's $108,000/ year.
They want people with experience, but they simply CAN'T fill the positions fast enough. As you advance in the ranks your pay goes up, on call time comes down, off call time goes up, vacation goes up. If you have a family, then it's almost moot to even think about it.

I doubt our cops are able to earn 100K whilst being a rank and file member.

My question to anyone and everyone, what are my other options if any with the schooling i have right now under my belt? Im so torn and stressed about this you have no idea. Its all i think about and its driving me crazy. I don't know if i can handle the responsibilities a police officer brings.
