policeman for a job

most cops in the US sure as hell don't start at 55K.
Maybe in LA/NYC/SF, but 55K buys nothing there. In most of the country that is a HIGH salary. I think cops start out at 30K in most of the country.

Very few would start higher then the 40's. In order to make 100k+ (assuming your area would even allow it) would mean 30+ years on the job.
The manager of the local In Shape City went to school to be a cop. He thought like you. Get on a small city police force, crime will not be too bad, serve the comunity etc. After 6 months he quit and came back to the gym. The thing he complained about the most was little kids being afraid of him.
dyhappy, you sound like a nice person, but seriously soliciting an S2000 forum for ways to get paid a lot without working?? You've been in Santa Monica way too long if you think that goal is realistic. The bottom line is that no one is going to pay you a lot of money to do something unless you 1) Bust your ass to learn it better than the next guy 2) Come up with an original idea that you believe it and get lucky that others see it the same way or 3) Be naturally gifted at something that no one else can do (Rubberband Man for example). So unless you've been blessed by God with a gift that pays, you are going to have to work. Nothing in life is free. Please do not add to the population that feels they are owed something

Ive come to a point in my life where i need to make a career choice. I just turned 21 and im about to finish my 2 year associates degree in general studies at a community college. This dosnt transfer very well to a 4 year school. My dad is a luitenant(sp) for the police department in the county i live in and has put 28 years in. He makes 105,000 without over time. I am thinking about going into the academy next spring and becomeing a police officer. Honestly, i dont see myself being a cop. Ive always veen into cars and thats all i know. I am an installer at a custom audio shop here in maryland.
My question to anyone and everyone, what are my other options if any with the schooling i have right now under my belt? Im so torn and stressed about this you have no idea. Its all i think about and its driving me crazy. I don't know if i can handle the responsibilities a police officer brings.

follow up with the car and stero thing as your first choice(while you are in school) get the piece of paper that says you know what you are doing. then the sky is the limit.
I know ALOT of cops - a few work in the "gang division" and a few in narcotics, including my GFs godfather, who was a lieutenant. One of them transferred to the fire academy when he got the call (because he was about to have a newborn). He was making 90K per year as a cop, and loved it.
bad things - most of them here are VERY racist, because they deal with idiots the just so happen to be of one race. I love hearing the stories... it's like an everyday thing - something new.
you DO NOT work 3 days per week, you work 6 ON 2 OFF (8 day week).
Firefighters in Chicago work 1 ON 2 OFF and end up working only 85 days per year! great pay, starts over 50K. ALMOST impossible to get the job. The fire test is once every 10 years in the city, and it just happened last year. Then they call you.
I'd love to be a cop. just not smalltown. the excitement is nice
