My S gets about 24-25 mpg on average, not great compared to economy cars, but not too bad.

If you're so concerned about the environment, there are many things you can do (as I do): plant trees; recycle aluminum, glass, and papers; take plastic bags to grocery stores; etc. All the little things do help out a great deal.

Never, no way. Not after seeing the facts. The graph the main dude used to illustrate global warming shows quite clearly that the earth goes through a warming trend every 100-150k years and guess where we're right smack dab in the middle of? Yeah about 125k since the last warming trend...

considering fuel efficiency... consider how much effort state and local governments take into account when they do traffic and stoplights. Annoying as hell to get regulated by stoplights when there is no one else on the road. They could increase throughput and thus fuel efficiency... but they don't... and if safety is their main concern, then why should fuel efficiency and pollution be our concern?

DYHappy - I sold my F250 Diesel partly because I didn't like the idea of poluting the world. Of course I now have a V10 Gas engine which gets slightly worse milage but hopefully it is not poluting the world nearly as much.

I have heard (second hand on this board I think) that China is creating way way more pollution than the USA......????

It is pretty ****ing hot out here in PA today!!!!

Excel - Who in the hell thinks they can go backwards millions of years and even think they can guess what the temperature was? hell the weather man can't even guess tomorrows temps correctly..... Who's chart is this, or did you just create it to back up your post?

I'd recommend reading State of Fear, by Michael Crichton. It's a work of fiction, but pokes some holes in conventional wisdoms held to be fact by people who think they know global warming is happening.
I don't claim that it's not, but if you read that book, it may give you a little skepticism, which can't hurt.
It points out inaccuracies/inadequacies in the methods used to measure group temps and water depths, as well as talks about how a researcher/scientists motivation and source of funding can affect the results of his study.
Actually, as a novel of fiction it's not really a good book, but the arguments are interesting to read.

[QUOTE=dyhppy,Jul 30 2006, 02:28 AM] even though the S is highly fuel efficient relative to other sports cars, do you every feel guilty for using a machine that contributes to global devastation?

I'd agree with this. The book raised my eyebrows a bit. Yes, fiction, but it asks some questions you wouldn't normally think about.

Having said that, the Earth is in a constant state of change--species (plant and animal) have been evolving, dying out, etc. for hundreds of millions of years. If we were around during the time of dinosaurs, would we have tried to save them also? We pollute the planet, but the planet always has ways of correcting itself through weather, climate, geological change.

Short of inventing a weapon that could *destroy* Earth, or purposefully embarking on mass-genocide of hundreds of species at once, we're going to be okay.
