If you really, really love pool and will love it in the years to come, then definately get a good table as it will enhace the experience about a million times compared to going to pool halls outside.

Make sure you have enough room for all kinds of shots though.

The minimum room size to accomodate a regulation size pool table is 16x13. But u can always get shorter cues. The 7ft table doesnt make that big a diff.

my space for the pool table is 17x16, that should be good for a 8ft, or even 8.5 right?

For an 8 footer I say you need 18 * 16 so you may be short on two sides. However that is assuming you are making a shot with a 5+ feet cue from the rail. In most cases you will angle the cue to hit the ball properly when it is at the rail so it may not be a problem... but you won't know until you try.
