Default Portable Air Conditioner

Has anyone purchased or used one of these? I am looking at getting one for my house. Most homes out here don't have air because the temp, especially at night, doesn't justify it most of the year. However, there are times during the summer when it does stay hot enough at night that a bit of air is more than welcome. I found a unit at Lowes for a little under $500 that is 8300 BTU. Attach the hose to a window kit and you are set. It is nice that it can be easily wheeled from room to room. Are these quiet enough for a bedroom? Any thoughts or experiences appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a window unit, It works great. 7000 btu's and it was $189.00 CANADIAN! at Home Depot. It's pretty quiet, but I'm used to sleeping with an air purifier, and a dehumidifer, so noise doesn't really affect me much.

Just for ref.

5000 btu 10' X 15' room

8000 btu 17' X 20' room

12000 btu 22' X 25'room

Why suffer? just get one!

So the hose is only used to expel hot air? I thought you meant it was an evaporative unit. Depending on your room size, 7000 BTU should hold you if your days are only marginally warm. I had an 8000 BTU on an enclosed patio (24'x12') that worked pretty well except on the hottest Texas days, so I moved up to 12,000 and it works great all the time now.

I guess the only reason I mentioned the window unit is because for the price, you could throw one in you Bedroom, one in your living room and still save some money. They don't weigh much and are easy to move and store.
The only thing I know about the movable units is that A buddy of mine got one, and for like 200 bucks more he just got central air put in. So it wasn't a very good value. Although I don't know what the unit cost, or what central air runs.

Our bedroom windows slide from side to side. The vast majority of window based air units are for windows that slide top down. The few they do make for side to side windows are just as much money as the portables I have been looking at.

Central air will easily cost several thousand dollars depending on your existing duct work. The price of central air is substantially greater than the $490 portable unit. We just don't get enough hot days to justify a central air investment. It is nothing like when I lived back in the Midwest where central air was a must in our home. It took me a while to get over the fact that no one has air in the pacific northwest.

The portable unit itself has a drip pan to deal with moisture. So, the hose is only needed to expel the hot air from the room you are trying to cool.

It sounds like it would be perfect for you.
Most places like Home Depot have a great return policy.
If you see a hot spell comming up, buy it. If it sucks, or is to loud then just return it. Not much to lose. Funny enough, my buddy called me and I remembered to ask him. The unit he had cost 900 CDN, and he had central air installed for 1100 CDN. He already had the existing duct work. So for short term use, what more could you ask for?
