CMD-SHFT-3 works for me. Additionally, you can use CMD-SHFT-4 to get crosshairs, and screenshot only a cropped section of your display.
Under OS X it should create a PDF file called "Picture 1" (or Picture 2, etc if Picture 1 already exists) containing your screenshot. You can open this in Preview and export out a JPG from there.

I'm hitting apple+shift+3 ...... control+shift+3.... option/alt+shift+3 and still nothing... I wonder if it has anything to do with my preferences
Disk Utility-> Repair Permissions if that doesn't work.
