The death toll would be fairly high and the terrorists stand a fair chance of slipping away to kill another day. Certainly in the UK they could cause a lot of damage before armed police could get there to deal with them.
Uhm... what about a car bomb near an outdoor public event? Or even how about 5lbs of Semtex in a waste bin in a shopping centre.

Yes thats my point, soft targets in populated areas to spread a maximum amount of terror.

I think I ought to make my underlying point a little clearer. In the UK we've been subject to these sort of attacks for a number of years.

The two examples I picked out of the air were Eniskillen & Warrington. Two outrages from a history of many

IMO if we change our lifestyle in response to a terrorist attack then the terrorists objectives are partly met.

If anything good has come out of this horror, it is the realisation that international co-operation between intelligence agencies is the key to combating terrorism.... in fact it always has been!

The U.S. I think, had become a little complacent since the end of the cold war with Russia and this was reflected in the general scaling down of it's C.I.A. and other intelligence organisations.

We probably all find the accounts of the more dubious of their activities not entirely to our taste, but the fact is they operate in an environment where no-one succeeds hampered by a set of 'Boy Scout Rules'

The price of freedom as it always has been is... constant vigilance!

What are we civilians to do?

It's the responsibility of government to ensure the safety of it's population. Let the government respond to terrorism as best they see fit. After all we all trust our duely elected representatives, don't we?

Keep our eyes and ears open to suspicious activity.
Too many people are thoughtless in their actions, such as leaving bags unattended etc in public places. This wastes the time of the police etc who may be called to investigate.

If the guy who was asked by one of the terrorists to teach him only to fly the plane and not to land or take off, maybe, just maybe, they could have been thwarted. It is the little things that count.

The public can also help the government to implement things such as identity cards and stop being so paranoid If you have nothing to hide, you have no reason to be concerned.

Sunchild, I'm sorry also for being so glib about my response. Guess the English humor rubbed off on me and stayed. Andy is correct in his suggestions. Most people become to paranoid when things like this happen. Especially, people that haven't been trained. Acceptance of death is a major fact in all of this. Once you do it's not such a problem to live. Unless your ready to give it all up then you just can't let go of alot of anxiety. Anyway, Sunchild, don't sweat it man. Just be alert to what goes on around you. Vary your routine occassionally, try not to use mass transportation to much and be aware of something other than what happens in just your own world.

Report strange occurances in your neighborhood and accept the fact that we can't control everything. If your intrested in anti-terriorism training look on the internet. There are quite a number of organization that specialize in this type of training. Believe it or not it's fun and very informative. Just remember you won't ever be prepared for every senerio. You just have to wake up and be a little more alert.

Cheers

Jeff
