Thumbs up Problems with adobe acrobat

My work laptop hasn't been able to open Adobe Acrobat the last two days and its killing me because I need to access documents. As it states in the title it uses windows 2000 and I have a licensed version 6 acrobat.

When I try to start acrobat, open an acrobat file or open a pdf link, the AcroRd32.exe image starts up in my processes and the CPU usage goes from ~14% up to 100% and when I end the process it returns to normal

So far I've tried rebooting, I've run a repair through the control panel and I'm running a virus scan right now but other than that I'm lost for solutions with this problem since I've never had a program issue

Can anyone help me with this please?

Try to start Acrobat from the application shortcut, then run an update, I found that sometimes the update window comes up in the background and you can't get it back to the front.

Yeah, I had the same problem at home. I finally noticed the damn Acrobat update window was up, but not showing in the foreground. Just get to the update window and click install and you should be all set.

I've seen this problem before, and I'm 99.5% sure I know what to do:

Look to see if something called "Windows Journal Viewer" or similar is installed. Its something to do with reading documents created in Windows XP Tablet PC edition or some such.

Just remove this program using the Add/Remove Software control panel and you should be good to go.

My guess is that this got installed as part of an over-zealous round of Windows Update. Next time remember to read the description of what you're putting on your computer. Just because it comes from Microsoft, doesn't mean you need it - because in this case, it's kicking you in the balls.

That Windows Journal viewer gets installed when you install Office 2003.

If you have the Windows Journal installed and try to open a .pdf file windows will try to open it with the Journal Viewer.

I had to go to every machine in the office and manually remove Journal Viewer when this happened at the office.

You should also go to your file folder options to ensure that Adobe is the only software associated to open a .pdf file. Also you might want to upgrade to Adobe 7.0.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys but......

I tried minimizing to see if there was a pop-up and alas...
I never leave auto update on and haven't manually updated windows or installed office 2003
I'll check the file types allocation this morning but unless a virus has changed it and then slipped under the radar I doubt this is it either.

Remember it is launching AcroR32d.exe so it's trying to open
One strange thing that I did notice when I shut it down last night was a program that didn't end itself and it was called "font collector" or something to that effect. I have to check this out because it's never been there before

Thanks again, keep it coming

Yep, I checked for journal viewer and found nothing. Checked the file assoc and it was correct I've emailed my IT team and in the mean time I'll run a restart and see what that yields I suppose.

re-install Acrobat

It worked for me when this happened.

Hopefully it's that simple
